Lincoln County resident Pat Lewis has been recognized as a recipient for the prestigious Oregon Diabetes Coalition' "Diabetes Hero Award."
The award was presented during the annual meeting of the Oregon Diabetes Coalition held May 12 at the Ambridge Events Center in Portland. This event was held to present ways to reduce the impact of diabetes throughout Oregon and to present "Oregon's Action Plan for Diabetes." Individuals were honored statewide for their community and personal involvement in diabetes prevention as well as patient self-management and control.
The Diabetes Hero Award is presented to individuals who advocate on the behalf of people affected by diabetes and educate within their community about diabetes. Lewis has been an active and dedicated Lincoln County Diabetes Coalition member since 1998 and demonstrates "an extraordinary personal commitment to preventing diabetes" as well as reaching out to those living with diabetes through various health fairs and community events held throughout Lincoln County. In addition, she has volunteered her time and talent in applying for funding opportunities which have supported programs and activities offered for people affected by diabetes.
Five years ago Lewis planned and organized what is now the annual Diabetes Update Symposium, a highly popular and well-attended event in Lincoln County for people living with diabetes, family members, caregivers and friends. For this year's Diabetes Update Symposium Lewis applied for and received funding through the Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund to provide a bus service to and from the symposium for individuals affected by diabetes who had transportation issues.
