Medicare patients with diabetes and cardiovascular disease can significantly reduce both the cost of their medical care and rates of hospitalization by participating in a telephone-based diabetes disease management program, a new study finds. The authors will present their results Monday at The Endocrine Society's 92nd Annual Meeting in San Diego.

Using gene therapy, researchers in the US managed to reverse Type 1 diabetes in laboratory mice, raising hope that a "cure" for the disease might be developed using this approach. However, only about 50 per cent of the treated mice responded to the therapy, so there is still a lot of work to do before such a method can be trialled as a potential treatment...

A new study in the journal Respirology reveals that patients with diabetes who are hospitalized with acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease experience longer time in the hospital and are also at an increased risk of death, compared to those without diabetes.

MONDAY, June 21 (HealthDay News) -- Despite its endorsement last year by the American Diabetes Association as an effective way to diagnose type 2 diabetes, new research out of Singapore suggests that the hemoglobin A1c blood test may not accurately identify the disease among elderly Asians.
